LARGE GROUP DISCUSSION
- What has happened in Ephesians so far?
- Read 14-15. What is the connecting word here? What sentences or ideas is Paul connecting?
- Read 13. Paul is praying this so the church of Ephesus will not lose heart. What was going on at that time that they would be losing heart over?
- Read 16. What is the first thing Paul prays for? How is the church of Ephesus strengthened? What are ways the Spirit strengthens us?
- Read 17a. What is the second thing Paul prays for? How does Christ dwell in the church of Ephesus’ hearts? What does faith have to do with Christ dwelling in our hearts?
- Read 17b-19. What is the third thing Paul prays for? What are the things that being rooted and grounded in love bring to the church of Ephesus? Why does knowing the love of Christ bring us the fullness of God? What is the breadth and length and height and depth of Christ’s love for us?
- Read 20. What is the fourth thing Paul prays they will know? What is the power at work within the church of Ephesus? Why does Paul end this prayer by reminding Ephesus that God can do more than we ask or think?
- Read 21. What should our response be to God, knowing all he does for us? How do we glorify and revere God?
- So, why should we not lose heart?
SMALL GROUP:
- Where or what about God, the church, the Bible, in your life, etc, have you been losing heart in? Why?
- In what ways is the Spirit currently strengthening you? How specifically is he strengthening you? (v. 16)
- How do we know Christ dwells in our heart? How does that stop you from losing heart? Are you struggling to have faith in that, and if so, how can Ephesians reassure you? (v. 17a)
- What are the implications of a love like this to you? How have you personally seen this love manifest in your life? How does this love root and ground you? (v. 17b-19)
- God is able to do more than we ask or think, but it can be hard to believe or remember that. What is something that you might be struggling to trust God with? What does this verse reassure you of? (v. 20)
- What are ways you personally can glorify and revere God over the coming week? (v. 14, 21)
CHALLENGE
Three times this week, say verses 17-21 out loud, then take time to meditate and pray on the great love God has for you.
